This post is meant to show you everything you need to know from how to use Kayak to search for tp how to book your next trip with Kayak.
What is Kayak?
Kayak.com, also known as KAYAK, is a fare aggregator and travel metasearch engine owned and operated by Booking Holdings. The company also runs Checkfelix, Mundi, Hotels Combined and swoodoo travel search engines.
Steve Hafner and Paul M. English formed Kayak in 2004. Steve Hafner, the current CEO of Kayak, helped found Orbitz in November 1999 and oversaw business development, advertising sales, promotions, and product marketing activities before Kayak.
Pros of using Kayak flights
Get the best deals instantly–the aim of Kayak is to help you get the lowest price–time–on your accommodation. They also highlight the lowest green price, so you always know the least expensive travel booking website to book with. And even if you have a lower price than Kayak on another travel booking website, they will let you know! You can compare prices and save money on every trip between all its many partners!
Monitor prices over time–you can set price alerts easily on Kayak. It allows you to watch weekly travel accommodation prices and see how they change over time. Therefore, if you are interested in a plane and have time to plan your travel, you can see price trends to make sure that you make a good booking decision.
Use kayak tools to plan your trip–Kayak has great resources to help you schedule your trip. Use the Kayak trip planner to save your searches, bookings, and any data you accumulate overtime to keep everything in one location. You can also model itineraries to plan your trip every hour!
Cons of using Kayak flights
No of ingenuity–While Kayak offers you the ability to see the lowest travel accommodation rates and provides you with resources to help you plan your journey, its features are not especially innovative. We have a smaller number of user reviews for accommodation relative to other travel websites and do not offer any kind of "lowest price guarantee." Kayak will help you find the lowest prices, but you may want to consider one of Kayak's rivals if you're searching for a more robust travel website.
Potential security issues–There are some potential risks involved with most travel booking websites because typically personal and/or financial information needs to be entered. Although Kayak is not more of a safety risk than any other travel website, when using it, it is still important to be careful. Just enter your personal information when needed, and watch out for fraudulent emails.
How to use kayak flights
On the home page, before you begin your first search, Kayak will reveal your "Recommendations" as well as routes to "Popular Destinations" based on your home city.
Such parts are planned for very particular flights and dates, so if you're looking for a certain itinerary, they might not be very helpful. This page, though, deliver some great deals if you're versatile!
Many of these offers are as near as two weeks for flights, so if you're searching for a last-minute travel bargain, kayaking is a great place to start your quest.
Ways to Search for a Flight on Kayak
Enter your departure location, arrival city, and dates to begin your quest on Kayak; then click "Quest” Thus, you will be taken to the next page, displaying a list of free flights. This is the main reservation site, and a wealth of information is included.
You may change this setting to filter by Cheapest, Quickest, Earliest Takeoff, Latest Takeoff, Earliest Landing, Latest Landing, or Latest Landing. To do this, simply select how to sort using the drop-down below the main search bar upper right side of the screen.
How to Search Flights and Complete Booking
The page's main middle section is where you will find flights available for your selected route. To see more flight information and complete your order, click on "View Offer."
The View Deal button can take you to either the website of the airline, Kayak's booking tool or OTA such as Expedia or Orbitz to complete your order, depending on the route, you select. You will be able to see from right above the orange key where the reservation is.
There is more than one booking option on some flights, but luckily Kayak first features the lowest priced option. Press the down arrow next to the orange Display Deal button to see other choices for your chosen plane. This will show all the prices on different websites in a drop-down box. Please note that on all flights this is not available.
Bottom line: Kayak is not a travel agency online — it is a search engine for travel.
How to Search for a Flight by Destination
Another way to check for flights on Kayak is to see some popular cities at the bottom of the home page. To pull up a page that shows lots of flight deals from your home airport to your preferred destination, click on "Flights" under the name of the city. These are all for specific dates, so the key to making this method work for you is again flexibility.
How to Search for a flight With Flexible Dates
You can view your selected travel dates plus or minus three days using the 3-day flex search tool. It is a great way to see if with a little versatility you can save some money.
Chose "Flexible Dates+/-" on the left side of the drop-down box of the calendar to use this feature. You can also pick a query for a Flexible Weekend or Flexible Month. Now you will see a price chart if you click on the Search button, so you can quickly see the cheapest days to travel to your chosen destination.
Note: You can save even a day or two of flexibility! To see your best options, be sure to look for your trip with flexible dates.
This is a cool drop-down page on the main menu under the "More." Click here to see all the places from your home airport where you can land. The tool also displays the estimated flight time, distance, and airlines flying the particular route. Checking out if you're searching for a place you can fly to without a layover is a pretty neat device.
How to Book Through Kayak
Occasionally it will seem that the flight you have chosen can be booked via Kayak; it will appear as a cost for Kayak. But while it seems like you're booking via Kayak, you're only using Kayak as a user interface— the booking is actually through a third party (usually an online travel company such as Travelocity or Priceline).
This is important to know: you will need to contact the party you booked through if you have any issues, not Kayak. The ticket was booked through Priceline in this situation, although the user did not click through to the website.
On some flights, you will see "Hacker Fare" instead of seeing the airline displayed below the rate. Don't worry— nothing is being compromised, and these fares are completely up and up!
All this means that, instead of a round trip on one carrier, Kayak found a good deal on a flight by bundling two one-way tickets(usually on different airlines). This can be a good way to get the best fares. Hacker Fares are offers that are based on two one-way tickets rather than a round trip. These can also take advantage of different airports.
The only thing you have to keep in mind with these Hacker Fares is that if something goes wrong, you have a little less security.
Let's say for a long weekend you're going to Chicago, but bad weather cancels your flight outbound. You may just decide to cancel the whole thing because it was a short trip. If you had a card for a round trip, you would have a lot more leverage to get a refund for your trip's second leg.
But since you've booked a Hacker Fare, your return flight is a one-way flight on another airline, meaning return flight has no real relationship to your outbound flight. It would be impossible to get a refund for the second leg of your trip; this is a stand-alone flight as far as the airline is concerned. While this is a relatively rare case, when you buy a Hacker Fare plane, it is good to be aware of it.
Kayak gives you a lot of great apps. When booking flights, they will always give you the lowest prices, even if those prices are not their own. Not only can you quickly get the best deals, but you can also set up price alerts over time to monitor price trends for lodging. You can also use the Kayak trip planner to save all your searches on the website, so you'll never forget the great flights you've watched.
Although Kayak is excellent to find the lowest travel accommodation costs, the website does not provide particular features that are unique compared to other travel websites. Kayak is right for you if you are looking for a fast, easy-to-use travel comparison website.
