Iceland is a Nordic island state in the North Atlantic, with a population of 348,580 and an area of 103,000 km2, making it the least populated country in Europe. The capital and largest city is Reykjavík. More than two-thirds of the population live in Reykjavík and the surrounding areas in the southwest of the country. Iceland is volcanic and geologically active. The interior consists of a plateau of sand and lava fields, mountains and glaciers, and many glacial rivers flow through the lowlands to the sea. Iceland is heated by the Gulf Stream and has a temperate climate, despite a high latitude outside the Arctic Circle. The high latitude and marine influence keep the summers cool, with most islands having tundra-climate.
