Croatia, officially the Republic of Croatia, is a country at the crossroads of Central and Southeastern Europe on the Adriatic. The capital, Zagreb, is one of the country's main subdivisions, along with twenty counties. Croatia has an area of 56,594 km² and a population of 4.28 million, most of whom are Catholics. The Croats arrived in the area in the 6th century. They organized the state in the 9th century into two duchies. Tomislav became the first king around 925, making Croatia kingdom. The Kingdom of Croatia retained its sovereignty for almost two centuries, reaching its peak during the reign of kings Petar Krešimir IV and Dmitar Zvonimir.
