Inverness is a city in the Scottish Highlands. It is the administrative center of the Highland Council and is considered the capital of the Highlands. Inverness is close to two important sites of slaughter: the Battle of Blàr nam Fèinne for the 11th century in Norway, which took place on The Aird, and the 18th-century Battle of Culloden, which took place on the Culloden Moor. It is the northernmost city in the United Kingdom and lies within the Great Glen at its northeastern end, where the River Ness joins the Moray Firth. At the latest in the 6th century a settlement was founded, which was recognized in the 12th century by Dabíd mac Maíl Choluim as the first royal document. The Gaelic king MacBahad Mac Findláich, whose assassination was immortalized by King Duncan in the 11th century in Shakespeare's largely fictionalized play Macbeth, held a castle in the city where he was the Morman ruler of Moray and Ross.
